SEVENTEEN reasons to SERVE

When I was young, the youth ministry and those serving in it changed the trajectory of my life, and I am thrilled to “Pay it Forward” by serving the next generation! I STRONGLY believe that we need to come alongside our children and teenagers – teaching them, encouraging them and LOVING them!

.

Here are 17 reasons to serve in children’s or student ministry:

.

1. When we serve children, we serve Christ himself!

.

Matthew 25:40: ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me!

.

We are a “family.” Just like each person in our household has chores and responsibilities, each member of the church family should look around and say, “What needs to be done?” And then DO IT! Every person chips in and helps!

.

2. We live in an interconnected world, serving children makes a positive impact on our world.

.

.

None of you should look out just for your own good. Each of you should also look out for the good of others. Philippians 2:4

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. Ephesians 2:10

.

3. Serving takes the focus off of YOUR problems.

.

Serving others takes the focus off YOU and your problems and allows you time to focus on others.  You’ll find that when you are encouraging others, you YOURSELF will be encouraged.

.

Bonus: You will learn that our GREAT GOD is bigger than all of our problems!

I will often be able to serve another simply as an act of love and righteousness…but I may also serve another to train myself away from arrogance, possessiveness, envy, resentment or covetousness. – Dallas Willard’

.

.

4. You will make an impact on your own children.

The Barna group recently released a statistic that shows your children are 80% more likely to continue in their faith if their parents were serving in the ministry.

Your children are watching you and learning what you value.

.

5. God has lavished GOOD on you so that you can lavish good on others!

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! I John 3:1 NIV

“We are created to join God on a mission….he calls us to roll up our sleeves and join him with our talents, our money, our time and our passion. He wants his mission to become our mission.” – Bill Hybels

.

6. Serving children will have the greatest, LONG TERM impact!

Children are just beginning to develop life-long beliefs, habits, and values – we can help shape them! What gets “poured into” children will be what comes out of them as adults. When children grasp that God loves them and has a GOOD plan for their lives, their lives take on more meaning, purpose, and JOY!

.

7. Young people are highly influenced by role models, but many don’t have one.

You can be that role model!

.

8.  Spiritual development begins at age two and is usually formed by before age 13.

If people do not embrace Jesus as their Savior before the end of their teenage years, their chance of doing so later in life is slim. Children are the group of people who are the MOST receptive to the Gospel AND the most receptive to discipleship.

.

9. Our current young ones are our future leaders.

The people who are leading our country today were once young people who may or may not have had wise and caring people investing in them.

  • Christians have a tremendous opportunity to help build a better, more God-honoring world by investing in the moral and spiritual character of future leaders. – George Barna

    .

10. Being ‘in the action’ is way better than sitting on the sidelines.

You can be a spectator and watch a good service, chat with friends, go home. Or you can get in the game and be a part of the adventure.

.

11. You will learn, grow and develop skills you didn’t even know you had.

Every time I serve, I learn things that apply to my life – and I can talk these things through with my children. We reflect on the lessons together throughout the week.

“A critical component of someone growing in their faith is serving.” – Dale Hudson

Leading others forced me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to grow in areas where I would have become stagnant. We get to develop gifts we may not even realize we have! We get to be used by God in ways we never imagined!

We can learn from children:

Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

.

12. It’s FUN!

We play GAMES to learn! If you need a reason to smile, work with kids – they give you LOTS of reasons to smile. Their JOY is contagious. Seeing the world through their eyes is simply delightful!

.

13. You will meet new friends!

Loneliness is an unfortunate problem in our generation. We text more than we talk and connect with people on social media more than we do in person. Serving changes all that. While serving, you will get to know others, build relationships, laugh together, learn together, and grow together. Most of my closest friends are people who I’ve met while serving.

.

14. Serving gives us an opportunity to put our faith into action.

Serving helps us grow in our faith. Scripture tells us that:

“Faith without deeds is useless.” James 2:20 NIV

“I see Christ in others, and they can see Him in me.” – Michelle Anthony

.

15. Working with children and teens has the potential to change the trajectory of one’s life.

I’m forever grateful to the men and women who served in the church when I was young. I felt loved, welcomed, and most importantly – I learned that GOD LOVES ME and has a GOOD plan for my life! I learned that God is my Father and I could trust him. It changed my life. (Read my story by clicking here)

We get to team up with God to change the world!!!!

If children learn to love God with their whole heart, mind, strength, and soul – then larger problems as they grow will be by-passed. Strong, healthy children will grow into adults that positively impact our society. – George Barna

.

16. Children need a THIRD voice

Though the primary people responsible for spiritual development are parents; children and student’s need a THIRD (and fourth and fifth) voice speaking truth into their lives! I can name a specific third, fourth and fifth voices that impacted me, can you think of those people as well? I’m so grateful for the people who spoke to me with truth and love when I was going through the “My Parents Don’t Know Anything” stage! I’m honored to have the opportunity to be that voice in the lives of our future leaders. You can be that voice too.

17. Serving is good for your health

In the book entitled “The Healing Power of Doing Good,” author Allan Luks discovered that: Retired men who volunteer one day a week live two and a half times longer than retired men who don’t volunteer at all.

In the book, Happiness Hypothesis, the author shares this profound study:

.

Serving is like joining a gym!! (Keep that New Year’s Resolution!)

We never need to feel guilty asking people to serve our children and students. It’s not what we want FROM them, it’s what we want FOR THEM!

When I invite others to serve, I am giving them a GIFT – a gift they give and a gift they keep. Why am I so confident in this?

  1. Because of how it positively changed my life. People served and invested in me, and I will never be the same. Their service will ripple through eternity! (Click here to read that story)
  2. Because of the joy and satisfaction I’ve experienced volunteering in children’s and student ministry.
  3. Because I’ve been thanked by countless volunteers for providing them a place to grow, serve, and find fulfillment.
  4. Because of how it has positively impacted my four sons who attend children’s ministry!

What do YOU have to offer? More than you probably think. You have the gifts and talents you were born with. The passion that inspires you. The blessing of education. The skills you’ve honed as you’ve worked at home or in the marketplace. The life experiences that have matured you. The pain that has deepened you. The love that spills from God’s heart into yours.” – Bill Hybels

THANK YOU to those of you who invest in our children and teenagers! I appreciate you.

If you volunteer or serve somewhere in your community, I’d love to know WHERE you serve and WHY you serve! Please leave me a comment!

My Journey, Part 4 – A New Role!

The truth is that the Spirit of the living God is guaranteed to ask you to go somewhere or do something you wouldn’t normally want or choose to do…The Holy Spirit of God will mold you into the person you were made to be. -Francis Chan

For the last 6 years, I’ve been a stay-at-home mom to my four little boys. (Read about that here)

This summer, I was invited to join the children’s ministry team at New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

Once again, my first reaction was: “No thank you, I’m a busy mama with four little boys!” But I knew I needed to stay quiet and listen, then pray about this before responding. And that’s what I did.

We’ve loved being a part of New Life church – we have a community of friends here! And I’m passionate about Children’s Ministry! So…after talking it through with Ted, and PRAYING, I felt that in spite of any fears or wondering if I could do this…I needed to say YES to becoming the Children’s Ministry Director of New Life Friday Night (the Friday night congregation of New Life Church).

I am blessed to be a part of an incredible team, work with amazing children, in a role that I am passionate about. It’s also a supportive and flexible environment – what more could you ask for?

This new role began in September, and the first step was recruiting new volunteers. I STRONGLY believe that adults (and teenagers) need to come alongside our children – to teach them, encourage them, and love them! It made a HUGE difference in my young life (click here to read that story) and I know it makes a difference in the lives of the children who attend New Life.

28 days ago, we started a campaign asking for 90 new volunteers in 90 days. As of October 20th, 2017, we have 60 new volunteers committed to serve our kids!!! I am now getting the volunteers plugged into the the right spots so that they flourish in their roles! I will be supporting them, their families, and the staff at New Life Friday Night.

Though I sometimes feel inadequate as a mother, director, and writer – I know that God working in me and through me can accomplish great things. I ask Him for help each day – that He would use my life to be a blessing to my family and to others. I pray daily for wisdom as I parent my children, write for those who read this, and coordinate our Friday night children’s ministry! I would cherish your prayers as well!

And I hope that if you live in the area, you will visit me at New Life North. We meet at 6:30 PM every Friday!

My Journey, Part 3 – Becoming a Stay-at-Home Mama (SAHM)

In 2011, our children’s ministry had grown from 25 kids to about 300 kids! Click here to read that story.

I was also the mother of a growing 3-year old, an extremely active 1-year-old, and very pregnant with our 3rd son!  My husband and I agreed that for this season of our lives, it would be best for me to be a full-time, stay-at-home mom.

Since 2011, we’ve gone from two to three, then FOUR little cowboys!

I’m incredibly grateful for the years of being home with my littles! Getting everyone the food they want, the drinks they need, their teeth brushed, nails clipped … getting them washed up, then dried off, making sure they go potty or get their diapers changed, getting all of their clothes, socks, and shoes on (why can’t I find all the shoes! Where do they hide the shoes?).

On days we have places to go, there are four different types of car seats or seat belts that need to be fastened – while at least one child is crying about something. In winter, I’ll get all extra layers packed onto each one, but when we’ve arrived at our destination, they’ve taken everything off. And so I start over. Let’s just say that I’m GLAD for the “STAY-AT-HOME” part of ‘stay-at-home mom.’

There were days in those ‘little years’ that I’d be so tired by the end of the night, I’d just cry. I knew I’d be up with a baby through the night and have another long day ahead of me with four busy little boys. Ted is an amazing daddy and husband, but for a few of those ‘little years’ he was working full time – plus going to school full time to earn his master’s degree. When he finished school, he commuted to Chicago every day for work – making his long days even longer with an hour-long drive each way! Many days each week he would leave as the boys were waking up and get home when they were going to bed. (Which was one of the things that inspired our move to Colorado – a better work-life balance!)

Being a full-time mama is hard, and I’ve talked about the hard. But it’s actually more wonderful than it is hard. The good far outweighs the bad! It’s hard to understand unless you’re in it!

Some of the things I love about being a mom:

  • being there for each of the ‘firsts’ – first step, first word, first food,

  • all of the snuggles, hugs and kisses,

  • hearing the sweet mis-pronounced words my boys say (lemonade is pronounced “little maid” at our house)

  • kissing their ‘owies’ and putting on all of the band-aids (so.many.bandaids!)

  • holding them and being there when they are sick,

  • watching them love, help, and protect each other,

  • laughing with them and enjoying the funny and creative things they say and do,

  • experiencing the world through their eyes! Life takes on new meaning and you begin to appreciate the little things.

What a privilege to be a mom!

Though it felt like they’d be tiny and completely dependent on me forever, I now have four boys who SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT. They are all potty-trained! My oldest son can make his own food – and helps cook for the family as well! They all know how to do so many things ALL BY THEMSELVES!! They make their own beds and help with other chores around the house.

After years of not having five minutes alone all day long, I now have time to do things like  START a BLOG and consider opportunities outside the home.

I worked part-time role at New Life church in Colorado Springs Click here to read about it! And I currently substitute teach at my children’s schools.

Others told me it goes by fast, and that was hard to believe when they were all babies, but now I see how TRUE it is.

Family day in Estes Park

This weekend we drove from Colorado Springs to Estes Park. I brought a book to read for the 2 hour drive, but only read for a few minutes because driving in Colorado is too beautiful to be looking down at a book!

As we approached Estes, we told the boys that the first person to spot an elk would earn a quarter.

PAUL was the first to spot not one – but a herd of about 50 elk!

We stopped and spent some time just watching them rest, walk, and play. Two elk were locking antlers, and we had fun watching them ‘wrestle it out!’

Then we stopped by the Estes Park visit center. It’s pretty basic – just bathroom and flyers and people available to answer any questions. We grabbed a map and picked a place for lunch and continued on our day.

We spent some time window shopping along the main street (Elkhorn) in Estes. I love these little Colorado towns with shops built right into the side of mountains!

We ate lunch at BigHorns. Is it bad to admit we ate Elk burgers!? Thank you, Mr. Elk, for feeding us!

After lunch, we purchased some taffy from this adorable, historic “Taffy Shop.” They give free samples of whatever flavor you want to try! Usually, I would pass on taffy. (I’d rather have chocolate) But this was taffy was DELICIOUS! It’s freshly made right there in the store, so it’s really soft and fluffy and oh, so good! I bought a small bag to take home – vanilla for me (so boring, right?), pecan taffy for Ted, cotton candy flavor for Clark and Paul, and raspberry for Luke and George.

After some time on the main street, we got in the car and drove up to see The Stanley Hotel where a couple of movies have been filled. (Dumb and Dumber and a Stephen King movie that I have not seen – I can’t watch scary movies)

Next, we visited the Estes Park visitor center. It’s free and had some interesting exhibits about the history of Estes Park. We enjoyed this little museum, and you can’t beat FREE!

It’s hard to visit Estes without going to the Rocky Mountain National Park. However, we didn’t go on this day because it’s $20 per car to enter and we knew we wouldn’t be staying long.  It was snowing, windy, and cold. We also considered just driving around the Park, but my kids had already been driving for a couple of hours earlier today and as beautiful as this park is, they didn’t want to be stuck in the car any more today.

We had a great family day and I’m glad we got to see beautiful Estes Park! Have you been here? What do you like to do? Leave a comment!

The 10 BEST things to do Manitou Springs, Colorado

Manitou Springs…what a quaint little town! I had no idea this gem was hidden just next to Colorado Springs.  There is so much culture, history and beauty in this town. Here are my ten most favorite parts of Manitou Springs:

1. Play at the historic Penny Arcade.

I love Skeeball!!

Compete with your friends and family in Horse Racing!

There are some really OLD and unique games!

Flying airplanes like his Poppy!

2. Taste the healing mineral water.

3. Hike Rainbow Falls

4. Climb the Incline

  • A mile high staircase up the side of Cheyenne mountain. Or you can bail out at the halfway point for a pretty walk back down.
  • Gorgeous views at the top! (Well, that’s what I’ve been told by my husband, I’m not sure I’m tough enough to hike all the way to to the top! Honestly, my legs hurt just thinking about it.)
  • Manitou Incline

5. Drive to the top of Pikes Peak

This drive is magnificent! Breathtaking … fantastic! You must take the drive to the top of America’s Mountain at least once in your lifetime. Thankfully, my husband drove so I could just enjoy every mile. I recommend visiting in the summer time – the Peak gets COLD! And bring LOTS of water – elevation sickness is a real thing. Add this drive to your Bucket List!

6. Get a treat

  • Patsy’s is a 100 year old snack shop. Try something from there or one of the other fantastic coffee and ice cream shops around town!

7. Shop

8. Soak in the warm mineral water at the Sunwater Spa.

9. Visit the Cliff Dwellings

“Is this where the Cliff Dwellers watched movies?” Asked by my 4 year old.

10. Eat

Eat & Shop

Don’t forget to take a souvenir home with you! Grab a copy of my Pikes Peak Children’s book.  All artwork is painted by a local artist. Click here to purchase a signed copy!

Hiking with Kids – Pulpit Rock!

Last week I happened to get a couple of hours with just my three big boys (ages 5, 8 and 10), so I decided we should go on an adventure!  I’ve been wanting to conquer Pulpit Rock since the first time I drove past it in June 2015 and now had the perfect opportunity to check this item off my bucket list.

I looked at my Google Map and drove around until I found the closest spot to park near Pulpit Rock – inside a beautiful neighborhood I had never seen before. We parked near a trailhead and started our hike. Just 20 minutes later – we were on top Pulpit Rock – with incredible views!

View of Pikes peak from Pulpit Rock

The boys did great … they loved the “climbing” part of this adventure more than the hiking.  I loved every bit of it.

Only Paul, my 5-year-old, complained at the very end. “My legs are SOOO tired…I can’t walk ANY MORE!”  I showed him how close we were to our car and he made it back (with energy to spare)!

As always, the great thing about hiking in Colorado is that it is so beautiful and so natural … but they are also dangerous. We talk a lot about safety on our adventures.

Paul at Pulpit Rock

George and Paul at Pulpit Rock

Clark at Pulpit Rock

I would recommend it for ages 5 and up. It would also make a fun and inexpensive day date (or SUNSET date). Pack a lunch or dinner and take time to enjoy the spectacular views!

Luke Washington – Our sweetest surprise!

It was October 2014, I sat with my girlfriends and told them a secret:

“I think I’m pregnant.”

I’d been feeling this way for about 3 weeks but had not said anything to anyone until that night. They convinced me to get a pregnancy test and take it first thing in the morning. The test confirmed what I’d been feeling; I was pregnant with my fourth child.

Now I had to decide how to tell Ted.  He would not be expecting this news. We had three young sons – we were busy, sleep-deprived, and money was tight. The news of this fourth child made us nervous. We knew we’d be missing a lot more sleep and buying a lot more diapers. I had just given away most of our baby stuff. And our boys were begging for a puppy. Instead, they’d be getting a baby brother.
I purchased a delicious pie and made a card that said: “God decided to add another cutie to our pie.” When Ted got home that night after a busy day at work, he dug into the pie without even noticing the card.
I handed him the card to read and he was shocked. We both were!
However, once we got over the shock, we remembered that this surprise pregnancy was a gift. Though we knew we’d be losing even more sleep, spending more money, doing more laundry and be busier than ever trying to balance four kiddos – God had a plan for this sweet life growing inside me.
When Luke Washington joined our family in May 2014, it was true. He has been such a gift to our family. The love we have for him is undescribable. We can’t imagine life without him. I’m so thankful that God blessed us with this SURPRISE!
Now, when anyone says they’re considering having another baby, I always say ‘go for it!’ Yes, it will cost you something, however, what you’ll gain far outweighs any cost!

We love you Luke! You are our sweetest surprise!

Funny things from the #Eglyboys

There are a lot of things happening in the world right now that are so very sad, but children have a way of reminding us to SMILE, to laugh, and to enjoy the simple things. Here are some things that my boys have said recently that made me smile – I hope it makes you SMILE too!

˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜

I told George that we would be at the doctor’s office in “CUATRO MINUTOS.” Since he started learning Spanish this year, I asked him if he knew what that meant.  “Chicken wings?!” was his enthusiatic guess. (Why are boys always thinking about FOOD!?)

˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜

Clark, age 8, who has ALWAYS been an EARLY riser, came downstairs later than normal and said, “Mom, the weirdest thing happened today. I woke up and was ready to get out of bed, but then I noticed how warm and comfortable my bed was so I decided to go back to sleep!” (Clark’s FIRST time sleeping in, and he had to tell me about how weird it was.)

˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜

Paul, age 5, came home from kindergarten yesterday and was so excited to tell me about all the apples he tried at school. He said his favorite ones were called “Yellow Yummy!”

Me: Do you mean “Golden Delicious?”

Paul: Yes, that’s the one. My favorites are GOLDEN DELICIOUS!

˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜˜

We were walking the older boys to the bus stop and Luke, age 3, saw a neighbor standing in his driveway. Luke said, “Hi, What are you doing today?” The neighbor responds, “I’m going to fix my doorbell today.” We continued to the bus stop, and I didn’t think any more about it. The next morning, as we were walking to the bus again, Luke sees the same man outside and asked, “Did you fix your ding dong?”  Thankfully, our neighbor didn’t hear him, so I clarified: “Luke wants to know if you fixed your doorbell?” “Yes!” our neighbor responded, “I fixed my doorbell!”

What’s something that’s made you laugh recently? Leave a comment!

9 In Faith/ Family/ Motherhood

How do you change this world? Love your family.

In light of the recent tragedies, this quote by Mother Teresa brings me comfort. I feel helpless, how can I fix it? What can I do?

There is something I can do and you can do too – we can love our families! We can raise our sons and daughters to make a POSITIVE difference in this world. We can teach our children to love and respect others. Whether a person is black or white, rich or poor – every human life deserves dignity.

Strong, loving, God-honoring families have a positive impact on every dimension in society!

The task we have in front of us can seem overwhelming. I know some days I feel like I’m failing as a mom. But each day I get to start over and try again.

One thing I do that helps me is investing in myself. Building my own strength, or putting on my own oxygen mask, replenishes me so I have something to give to my family. It’s difficult to pour good things into our children without first filling yourself. Spending time daily with God – praying, reading your Bible, meditating, reading from an inspiring book or study – are ways to fill your soul!

When I start my day with God’s word and prayer (and coffee) – I have the FUEL I need to be a better wife, mom, and leader. God fills MY love tank, and I can pour that love into my husband and children throughout the day.

Remember, we can make a difference in this world.

We start by loving our family today.
