A Peek into My Newest Children’s Book: The Great Lake Rescue

.

I’m excited to give you a sneak peek into my next children’s book, “The Great Lake Rescue!”

🛶

This entertaining tale, inspired by a true story, will be hitting the shelves this summer, bringing the adventures of the fantastic four to life, and reinforcing the message of kindness and helping others.

.

When I began my search for an illustrator for this book, I found Alyssa Whetstone. I knew she was a talented Minnesota water color artist, but didn’t know where in this large state she lived. When she agreed to meet with me, I discovered that we teach in the SAME SCHOOL DISTRICT! I’ve loved working with her, and if you are interested, you can find her art here: alyssawhetstoneart.com.

Thanks for those of you who purchased a copy of Climb, Soar, Swim, Explore! I can’t wait to have you read this new one.

Our Top Five Favorite Family Movies

Do you need a Movie Night Suggestion? Here are our Five Favorite Family Movies. Have you seen these? What movie should I add to this list?

  1. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day!

This movie is one of our favorites!

The movie begins with everything going PERFECTLY for every member of Cooper family. Every member, that is, except Alexander. Alexander is having the worst day ever. That night he wishes that his family could experience a bad day. He wakes up the next morning to chaos and throughout the day, bad things keep happening to every member of his family…except Alexander. The movie has a great ending and demonstrates how to stay bonded as a family – even on a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

Have you watched it? Did you like it as much as we did?

2. Cheaper by the dozen– One and Two

3. The Blind Side– Less than $10 on Amazon

My Journey, Part 2 – I said YES when I wanted to say NO WAY

Ted and I were asked if we would consider moving to the Chicago area to serve in a church. (They wanted me to consider becoming the Children’s Ministry Director. At first, I wanted to say “No way!” But my husband asked for me to pray about it before answering. (Click here to read that story)

I prayed and felt strongly that, in spite of the fear and the unknowns, I needed to say “Yes!”

We agreed to a six-month trial period in my new role. If it wasn’t the right fit, I could go back to teaching elementary school.

Well, 6 months came and went, and I continued as the Children’s Ministry Director for almost a decade!

It was an INCREDIBLE journey, and I’m forever grateful that I said yes! I grew as a person, and a leader as the children’s ministry grew from 25 children to hundreds of children. From 3 volunteers to 100+ volunteers. Thousands of people came to events that we hosted for families. I got a front row seat to see God working in people’s lives and families – in our church, our city, and around the world!

Families in our church community were able to provide food for families in our city, as well as school supplies and free tutoring services for children. We provided Christmas gifts and clothes for hundreds of families. We sponsored children and families around the world – feeding them and helping pay for their education.  I got to witness children and their families come to know Christ and grow in their relationship with Him.

I’m forever grateful I gave a nervous and unsure ‘Yes,’ when the safer, more comfortable thing to say was ‘No!’

Have you ever been in that place before (maybe even right now), where saying “yes” was a leap of faith? Tell me your story!

Finding old friends in our new place!

Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born. – Anais Nin

When we moved to Colorado Springs, there was only one family we knew. They were our neighbors and the only who had helped us find our home. After 13 years in Chicago, we had developed a strong community of friends, and it was hard leaving that behind.

Soon after arriving in town, old friends of my husband (Ted) recommended we visit New Life Church because he thought there’d be some people at New Life that Ted might know. We went to a Friday night service and discovered that the Friday night pastor went to high school with Ted! Ted knew nearly a dozen people that were a part of New Life Church! How incredible to be in a brand new place and have some really special friends from the past! These are people that knew him well and immediately welcomed us into the church and their homes. From our very first visit, we knew that New Life is where we belong.

If you are in Colorado Springs and don’t have a church home, visit New Life Church. The pastors are incredible teachers, the music is absolutely amazing, and we love the children’s ministry! And best of all, it’s a church filled with some really incredible people.

In my next post, I’ll finish our “Pikes Peak or Bust” saga by telling you a great story about how we found our permanent home in Colorado.

Also, tomorrow is the last day to enter to win my giveaway. I’ll be choosing a winner tonight! Go here to enter!
