Book Review – Knights in Training

Since it is so likely that our [children] will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage. – CS Lewis

Knights in training is one of the best “parenting” books I’ve ever read!

It’s the first parenting book I’ve ever “savored”…

… the first one I plan to read over and over again …

… and the first time I’ve loved a book so much that I reached out to thank the author for writing it!

(Can you tell I like it?)

This book was filled with tons of practical ideas and inspiration in my journey in raising boys who are honorable, courageous and compassionate.

Here’s a quote from the book that sums up why I love this book!

“We need to start training them now to be ready to take the reins of leadership – to live with integrity, to think outside of themselves, and to value the people around them. We need boys who will use their strength for the protection of others rather than to prey on others. With power and strength comes great responsibility.”

I’m grateful for men and women who use their voices to inspire, challenge and teach us! Heather Haupt is one of those voices for me!

If you are a parent or grandparent – get this book!

Have you read it? If so, leave me a comment and tell me what you liked most!

Four of my Favorite Parenting Books

.

There are endless parenting books on the market – many good ones, a few really bad (or just plain BORING), and a few GREAT ones! Here are four of my favorites:

.

1. Knights in training by Heather Haupt

This book contains practical ideas and inspiration for raising boys who are honorable, courageous and compassionate.

“We need to start training them now to be ready to take the reins of leadership – to live with integrity, to think outside of themselves, and to value the people around them. We need boys who will use their strength for the protection of others rather than to prey on others. With power and strength comes great responsibility.”

2. Growing grateful kids by Susie Larson

.

I consider this a must-read for every Christian parent. It’s filled with page after page of Biblical truth and practical encouragement.

.

We have this one life, this short time on earth to make our mark and to make life count. We have these children in our care for a blink of an eye. NOW is the time to be engaged and fully present. Now is the time to rise up and be the parent who trains and prepares our children to become the individuals they were created to be.

Susie Larson, author of Growing Grateful kids

.

God promises to give wisdom if we ask him. We need wisdom because every child is different. The Lord will show you how to parent each of your children in a way that will help him or her to grow to be the person they were created to be.

3. The Blessing of a Skinned Knee: Raising Self-Reliant Kids by Dr. Wendy Mogul

This book was written by a parent and psychologist. I found it practical, extremely helpful, and even inspiring. I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed it so much that I went online and purchased a hard-copy. Topics include respect, chores, homework, helping your child deal with a ‘bad day,’ and building ‘faith practices’ in your home (though you don’t have to be a person of faith to find IMMENSE value in this book)! I highly recommend it to all parents.

.

Unsure how to find grace and security in the complex world we’ve inherited, we try to fill up the spaces in our children’s lives with stuff: birthdays, lessons, rooms full of toys and equipment, tutors and therapists. But material pleasures can’t buy peace of mind, and all the excess leads to more anxiety—parents fear that their children will not be able to sustain this rarefied lifestyle and will fall off the mountain the parents have built for them.

4. Talking to your kids about God: 30 Conversations Every Christian Parent Must Have by Natasha Crain

.

.

To care for the physical needs of others while ignoring their spiritual needs is like giving a hamburger to a hungry man sitting on train tracks and not telling him a train is coming. The Bible calls Christians to care for both physical and spiritual needs, and ignoring either puts people in serious danger.

Natasha Crain, author of Talking to Your Kids about God

.

Natasha Crain discusses the evidence for the existence of God, how science confirms the God of the Bible, how Christianity is different from other religions, and how all these things apply to us and the world around us. An excellent book for Christian parents who want to know how to answer their child’s questions. I recommend it to any Christian parent or parent who may be curious about God.

5 Books I Read in November: Reviews and Recommendations

Last month I absolutely LOVED every book I read. This month wasn’t as thrilling. I started the month with an amazing one:

.

.

Hiding in the Open: A Holocaust Memoir

Rating: 10/10
Review:

There was an article about this author in the Sunday paper that piqued my interest, so I found her book at our local library.

This author’s life story is phenomenal! She was a Jewish girl living in Poland during WW2. Just before Hitler liquidated her Ghetto, she snuck out with her sister. Using fake papers, they “hid” by working in Germany through the war.

The author went on to become a doctor, then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. She got married, raised a family, and worked in the medical field. The book is way better than my short synopsis. I recommend it to anyone interested in stories from WW2.

.

Exploring the White House by Kate Brower

Rating: 7/10
Review:

I started reading this with one of my sons and he wasn’t really into it. I finished on my own. There were some fun little facts about life in the White House, but most of the stuff written in this book is already well known. I would recommend it to someone in in middle or high school who may be interested in the life of a president or what happens in the White House.

.

LadyParts: A Memoir by Deborah Kopaken

Rating: 6/10
Review:

I usually love memoirs, but not this one. The author is a great writer, but the book is filled with SO. MUCH. (partially self-induced) DRAMA and struggle. I’ve read plenty of books with struggle, and those are usually the best ones (see the first book I mentioned above). However, many books share lessons learned, a redemptive twist, or some sort of triumph in the end. Not in this book. I kind of just felt sad and icky when I finished this story. I wished the author would have waited a few years to publish this book, to allow herself time to heal first. I don’t recommend this book.

.

.

Green Lights by Matthew McConaughey

Rating: 7/10

Review: The only way to ‘read’ this book is to ‘listen’ to the audiobook. It’s read by Matthew McConaughey and he is an entertaining storyteller, but there’s nothing profound in this book. If you want a book with nothing more than some amusing stories, check out the audiobook.

.

10 Habits of Happy Mothers by Dr. Meg Meeker

Rating: 7/10

Review: I respect this author, follow her on Instagram, and enjoy listening to her podcasts on parenting. Dr. Meg Meeker really understands the struggles mothers face, and writes to help us enjoy the journey. This book has some good nuggets, but I recommend her Strong Mothers, Strong Sons over this one.

Left to Tell

One of my favorite biographies of all time. This book tells the fascinating story of how one woman survived the Rwandan Genocide and how she was able to forgive those who caused her family and country so much harm.

Led by Faith

The follow up story to Left to Tell. How God provided miracle after miracle of provision. Wept with Joy through this book.

The Blind Side

There was a period of probably 3 years where I stopped reading. I had little children and was sleep-deprived and only wanted to use my free moments to catch up on household chores or REST (with my eyes closed). Then, I watched (and LOVED) The Blind Side and wanted to know more. I checked this book out from my Library and started devouring books again. This book reminded me why I love reading! SUCH a GOOD story!!!

I

A follow up – An autobiography by Michael Oher – his side of the story:

I Beat the Odds: From Homelessness, to the Blind Side, and Beyond

The Hiding Place

Knights in Training

My favorite parenting book of all time. If you have sons, I would HIGHLY recommend it. Click on this sentence for my review of the book.

Bread & Wine or Bittersweet

Two of my favorite books by Shauna Niequist. Stories of her life and how she sees God show up through the good and the bad.

Creating Magic

One of my favorite books on Leadership. The author worked for Disney and tells some incredible stories. I’ve read this book twice and going to read it again in the next month!

Bonhoeffer –

The Biography of Fredrich Bonhoeffer. This is such an incredible book that I now want to read the other biographies by Eric Metaxas.

Passion and Purity

The Love Story of Jim and Elizabeth Elliot. Excellent story for girls ages 12 and up!

For Kids:

Climb, Soar, Swim, Explore!

My book – perfect time to buy if you haven’t already! With the $5 coupon, you can get it for $10!

It tells the story of the Magnificent Four who love to explore climbing Pike’s Peak and encounter the animals who live on this mountain. You and your child will enjoy this story of adventure and learn some fun facts about Colorado Wildlife!

Jesus Storybook Bible

This is a Bible in storybook form. It’s a GREAT way for parents and kids to see how the Bible is ONE story that all points to Jesus.

Christmas Lizard

A sweet story that shares the true meaning of Christmas.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

One of my favorite ‘chapter books’ for kids ages 8 and up. A heart-warming story about how some challenging children learn the story of Jesus and how it transforms them.

Bob books

Great for beginning and struggling readers.

Have you read any of these? What are your thoughts? What are your favorite books for adults or kids?
